Explanation of LGBT terms

The term "LGBT" is an acronym that encompasses a wide range of sexual identities and orientations. It is important to understand these terms in order to be respectful and inclusive of those involved. In this article, we will explain key terms related to the LGBT community.

LGBT

LGBT is an acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. It is used to describe a diverse community of people whose sexual orientation or gender identity does not fit the heterosexual and cisgender norms.

Lesbian

The term "lesbian" refers to a woman who is sexually and/or emotionally attracted to other women.

Gay

The term "gay" is generally used to describe a man who is sexually and/or emotionally attracted to other men. However, it can also be used more broadly to refer to people who are attracted to the same sex, including women.

Bisexual

The term "bisexual" refers to people who are sexually and/or emotionally attracted to individuals of both sexes, male and female.

Transgender

The term "transgender" describes a person whose gender identity does not match the sex assigned to them at birth. For example, a person who was born with a female body but identifies as male is considered transgender.

Queer

"Queer" is an all-encompassing term that can be used to describe people whose sexual orientation and/or gender identity does not fit the heterosexual and cisgender norms. It is often used as an inclusive term to encompass all LGBT+ identities.

Intersex

The term "intersex" refers to people who are born with sexual characteristics (genital, chromosomal, hormonal) that do not clearly fit into the typical binary categories of "male" or "female."

Asexual

The term "asexual" refers to people who do not feel sexual attraction to others, regardless of gender. Asexual people may feel romantic and emotional attraction to others, but not sexual attraction.

Non-binary

The term "non-binary" describes a person whose gender identity does not fit the traditional categories of "male" or "female." Non-binary people may identify as both male and female, neither male nor female, or as having a gender identity that changes over time.

Agender

The term "agender" refers to people who do not identify with a specific gender, either male or female. Agenre people may consider themselves to be outside the binary gender system.
